Targeted at year 7 – 9 Science and Design & Technology students (maximum 30 students p/school), this project invites young people to explore how they can protect our towns and cities from future flooding.

Funded by The Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics, students are invited onto campus on 14 & 21 March 2025 (9:15 - 12:20 or 11:30- 14:20) to explore how engineers design and use physical demonstrators to show the impact of engineering measures on flooding and flood mitigation. Activities will be delivered by postgraduate engineers and engineers working in industry (Arup, JBA and The Environment Agency).

The practical workshop delivered in school on 4, 11 & 18 July 2025 will invite students to design their own flood defense. The final design, created by your students, will then be further developed and installed at Nell Bank Ilkley.

Funding is available for coaches to and from the University of Leeds.

Classes need to be able to commit to participate in both parts of the project (one campus visit and one in- school visit per school) to be eligible to attend.

Part one:
On campus visit
14 or 21 March 2025, 9:15-12.20 or 11.30-14.20 to hear about how engineers design demonstrators and then see a number of physical table-top demonstrations. We have reserved a space for students to eat their packed lunch before or after your visit.

Part two:
School visit
The follow-on 60-minute workshop will invite students to design their own flood defence demonstrator and will be delivered in schools in July. Dates being held are 4, 11 & 18 July 2025, timings can be discussed when booking. The final design, created with input from your students, will then be further developed and built in August 2025 – July 2026 and installed at Nell Bank Ilkley.
