Engineering Taster Day (Year 10)

Wednesday 18 December 2019, 9:30- 2:30pm
University of Leeds
Target audience: Year 10 students.   

For year 10 students studying Design & Technology and Engineering at key stage 4 and interested in studying Engineering at Higher Education.

Teachers to book and select students to attend. Maximum 15 students per school

Join us to experience life as an undergraduate engineer by carrying out practical activities in our teaching labs, exploring the campus and speaking to current staff and students in the School of Engineering.

Engineering: Enhanced Tour with Activity.

FREE

September-December 2019 9:15-12 pm
Faculty of Engineering
Target audience: KS3 & KS4 (max 32 students)

Bring your class to visit the Faculty of Engineering at University of Leeds and experience what it would be like to study Engineering at Higher Education, explore courses available and an Engineer’s role in society. Students will explore the campus and specialist facilities and equipment in the Faculty of Engineering before taking part in a one hour practical engineering activity delivered by post graduate students.

Lunch is optional. We advise that you bring packed lunches and spaces for lunch can be booked on request. On arrival you will be greeted by students to walk you to the Faculty of Engineering building. Minibus parking is available on request free of charge.

Book now for September–December 2019. The following dates are not available due to exams taking place; 13-24 January 2020 and 18 May – 5 June 2020
Please note these sessions are limited to 3 per term and offered on a first come first served basis. Bookings must be received at least 4 weeks in advance.

PwC Leeds

Back to Schools (employability & Careers)

November 2019
Target audience: KS5 (max 50 students)
Duration: 1-1.5 hours

The session will include recruitment processes and employability skills advice; coaching and an introduction to PwC and the profession, as well as information on our work experience and school leaver opportunities, including apprenticeships and degree programmes. This will be an interactive session run by business ambassadors who’ve recently joined PwC on a graduate or school leaver programme.

Computer Science: We now offer some fully funded degrees in Computer Science and would love to talk to students about these, and bring technology to life. Do you offer Computer Science A-Level, and if so there is a potential for us to run technology focused workshop instead / as well as the employability workshop.

Online courses

The University of Leeds provides FREE quality online courses to help students make the transition to university.  These courses can be used as a classroom enrichment resource or independently by students to discover exciting subject areas presented by leading academics.

The latest one is on Ecology and Wildlife Conservation and consists of five short online courses that look at the relationships between people and nature, and the challenging and difficult decisions we face when managing natural resources. Fossil Hunt

Target audience: KS2 (Years 3-6)

Take part in a fossil hunt with our expert palaeontologists. What did these strange creatures look like when they were alive? Where did they live? What did they eat? This fun and informative workshop is for years 3 to 6.

Spinal Angles, Statistics and Scoliosis

Curriculum Area: Geometry and Statistics – KS3 Mathematics
Target Audience: Mid-attaining KS3 pupils in Year 8/9

This session is a great way to show students that the maths skills they are developing are used in the real world in various professions.

The students will find out what the "Cobb angle" is and explore how to determine and measure it to understand scoliotic curve severity from spinal x-rays and analysing results for orthopaedic healthcare applications/professionals.

Limited availability Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Leeds Loves STEM talks

Target Audience: KS4 or KS5
Duration: 1 hour (includes two student talks)

Our student ambassadors will give a presentation and answer questions about their degree subjects, career paths and their experiences of studying at the University of Leeds.

These talks are a chance for your pupils to find out more about specific STEM subjects and opportunities in higher education. They allow pupils to explore some of the options available for further study and would be ideal for pupils making decisions about which subjects to study at a higher level.

Online survey for all institutions offering post-16 (Level 3) maths provision

To all institutions offering post-16 (Level 3) maths provision

You are invited to participate in an online survey which is part of a three-year project looking at how Core Maths provision is developing in schools and colleges across the country, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, and carried out by a research team at the University of Leeds. The link to the survey is https://leeds.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/core-maths

We are interested in teacher and manager views on Core Maths (whether or not individuals or institutions are teaching it).

We would be grateful if you could share this link with teachers and managers within your own maths networks, and encourage participation via social media as appropriate.

The survey should only take 10-15 minutes to fill in, and there is a prize of £250 to encourage participation.
