Discover Food Science
Spark curiosity and introduce your students to the fascinating world of Food Science at the University of Leeds.
We’re delighted to invite Year 10 school groups to take part in our three-part outreach programme, Discover Food Science, designed to help students explore what food science is, where it can lead, and what it’s like to study at university.

Programme overview
Part 1: In-school interactive talk (mid-November 2025-early January 2026)
Student Ambassadors from the School of Food Science and Nutrition will visit your school to deliver an engaging and accessible session. Students will learn what food science involves, hear about real-world applications, and get a glimpse into student life at Leeds.
Part 2: Campus taster day (Thursday 22 January 2026)

Your students will visit the University of Leeds for a hands-on, immersive experience including:
- Subject taster sessions – Explore food science through practical activities and demonstrations in our specialist lab facilities.
- Campus tour – Led by our Student Ambassadors, giving students a real feel for university life and the campus environment.
Part 3: Follow up in-school workshop led by teacher
You will be provided with a pre-recorded workshop with a step-by-step practical to deliver in class. This follow up activity will be a great opportunity to extend the campus day experience.
Who is it for?
This programme is ideal for Year 10 students with an interest in science, food, health, or sustainability. It’s designed to support early engagement with STEM subjects and raise awareness of future study and career options. We recommend teachers to select participants who have potential to achieve a grade 6 or above in Biology or Chemistry.
When selecting students to take part, we strongly encourage teachers to prioritise those who would benefit the most from this opportunity, such as students in receipt of Free School Meals, and those who are underrepresented in these subjects and at university.
Please note that due to the in-school talk, this programme is only available for schools within 1hr of the University of Leeds by public transport.
